Italo Trains

Italo are high-speed trains which are owned by private rail operator NTV. Since 2012, they run in conjunction with the state-owned railroad company, Trenitalia. NTV (Nuovo Transporto Viaggiatori) own the privately owned company, Italo. The trains are modern; travelling at 186 mph or 300 km/h, they offer regular comfortable services to the main cities around Italy, namely Rome, Naples, Florence and Milan.
Offering 4 different class options, it gives you the option to travel in more comfort and to choose which carriage option you prefer. The trains are eco-friendly, and use up to 30% less energy than previous models.

Italo Train Tickets: Find the Right Ticket for you

Each traveler has a unique way of exploring the world. At Omio, we help you discover not only the most convenient travel options —but also which Italo ticket is right for you.

  • Flex ticket:maximum flexibility. You can change your ticket—free of charge—as many times as you like and up to 3 minutes before departure. If you can no longer travel and use your ticket, you can cancel your ticket and get a refund with a 20% deduction.
  • Economy ticket: this ticket has right balance between saving and flexibility. You can change your ticket as many times as you like—up to 3 minutes before departure—by paying a penalty of 20%. If you can no longer travel, you can cancel the ticket and get a refund of 60% of the ticket price.
  • Low-Cost Ticket: the cheapest ticket with the most discounted price is ideal for those looking to make savings. The ticket can be amended by paying a penalty of 50% (plus any difference in price with the new ticket), but cannot be canceled and refunded.

Italo Recurring Offer: Same Day Return Savings

Save up to 50% off with Italo's same day return ticket—available on Omio. This offer can be purchased up to the day preceding departure through all channels, however, cannot be purchased from onboard staff. You can make unlimited changes to your travel time/date up to 3 minutes before scheduled departure time—free of charge—as many times you wish (subject to availability and for dates at least 1 day later than the original departure date). This offer does not allow any refunds. The offer has limited seat reservation availability, so get there fast!

Italo Class Types

On Italo trains, passengers can choose the class that best suits their preferred way of traveling. Therefore, in addition to the basic services—which are always guaranteed—you can choose add-on services, which aim to make the journey by train even more comfortable and in line with your way of traveling.

  • The Smart class is equipped with reclining leather seats, footrests, power sockets, free Wi-Fi, vending machines with hot and cold drinks and snacks, free access to the cinema carriage and the Italo Junior service an assistance service for children from 8 to 13 years of age traveling alone.
  • The Comfort class offers large seats with more personal space, power outlets, free Wi-Fi.
  • The Prima class offers more comfort with large seats, armrests, footrests, more leg room, a welcome service with snacks and free drinks. In this travel class, there is free Wi-Fi and a relaxation area, vending machines, a and reading light near your seat so you can work or read no matter the time of day.
  • The Club Executive class is Italo's most exclusive class with only 19 seats located in the last carriage, reserved lounges, extra comfortable armchairs, a welcome service, free Wi-Fi, Fast Track boarding, with bespoke catering and 9" screens.

Italo trains operate on high-speed routes, offering journeys across Milan-Florence-Rome-Naples since 2012 and then going on to offer routes from Venice and Bologna right through to Florence, Rome, Naples. The company opened routes starting in Turin and Bergamo and even some services to Salerno.

Do italo have extra assistance for those with reduce mobility or disability?

Italo trains are usually quite narrow due to their high-speed capacity, therefore it is important to ensure the aisles are kept clear. Wheelchair Assistance is available for elderly, injured or disabled passengers who require assistance to feel more comfortable when getting on or off the train. Call +39 06 8937 1892 or 060708 for PRM (People with Reduced Mobility) Assistance.

What Luggage Can I Bring on an Italo Train?

You can bring up to 2 items of luggage measuring 30cm x 70cm x 90cm as well as a bag that fits on your lap. You can store suitcases safely in the luggage compartment as you enter the carriage. For smaller items, you can use the luggage racks overhead to place soft items, small shopping bags and laptops; alternatively, place them under the seat in front of you. Make sure your luggage does not disturb other customers or block the aisles or exits.

Do Italo trains have WiFi?

Italo trains offer free Wi-Fi service in all carriages and classes. You can connect to the internet connection by opening up the internet browser and following the instructions. You must confirm your email address in order to access the web. Connect to the Italo Live Portal to start. Remember that using large amounts of data has been blocked by the provider to ensure all have access to the internet fairly. There is no cost for using the cinema service.

Are Pets Allowed on Italo Trains?

You can bring small pets weighing up to 10kg. The exception is for guide dogs, there is no weight limit for these. For animals which are 10kg and above, you will need to book a ticket by calling customer services on +44 808 164 8588. There are guidelines to having a dog over 10kg onboard, such as using a muzzle and placing a mat underneath the dog - if it is sat on a seat.

Do Italo have a Lost and Found?

Should you lose any luggage or items of clothing or coats, report where and when you think you lost the item on the Italo website. Their customer service will contact you if they retrieve it, or if it is handed in. Similarly, if you find anything on a train or at the station then hand it in to train station staff. Remember to keep clear of unattended luggage and inform a member of staff right away.

Can you Take Bicycles On Italo Trains?

Folding bicycles and pushchairs are considered standard luggage so they can be folded away and stored in the luggage racks for safety. Its best to cover your bicycle in a protective cover in the interest and safety of passengers, but also to protect your bike. Luggage is left without liability to Italo; it is the passengers' responsibility to take care of luggage.

Italo Cancellations and Modifications

Italo train tickets can be canceled if you change your mind. Go to the Omio Cancellations' page to amend your ticket or cancel it entirely. It depends on your ticket flexibility options, so check before purchasing and see which type of tariff gives you the most flexibility in terms of refunds. If you bought a flex ticket, you can make changes to the ticket even 3 minutes before departure. Contact customer services for refund or visit the contact page.

Can Children Travel for Free on Italo Trains?

Infants under 36 months can travel for free if they are not taking up a seat. As soon as children take up a seat then they have to buy a ticket. Although, children under 14 years' of age can travel for free on the Flex ticket. Minors traveling on their own can do so if they're between the ages of 8 and 14. They can sit in the Club Executive carriage by choosing the Italo Junior Service.

Can Italo Train Tickets be Refunded?

If your train is delayed, compensation is automatically paid to you within 30 days. In order to receive faster, you will be refunded with an Italo voucher unless otherwise informed. You can obtain an invoice from Omio upon booking your ticket. For complaints, send an email to [email protected]. If your train is delayed more than 60 minutes ensure to inform customer services if you need your return leg and it will be refunded along with your outbound journey, should you not wish to travel.
