Walking Around in Tarifa

Tarifa, a gem of Southern Spain, provides ample opportunities for strolling along its maze-like, cobblestoned lanes dotted with whitewashed buildings under terra cotta roofs. This historic town is perched on the southernmost point of Europe, the Strait of Gibraltar, on both Atlantic and Mediterranean waters. With a history spanning Roman, Islamic and Medieval times, and long windswept beaches, it's easy to stay around a while. Looking out from the battlements of Castillo de Guzman over the ferry port, you can even see Morocco across the Mediterranean Sea. The old town welcomes the pedestrian, admiring the Andalusian-Cadiz style houses and offering shops, cafes, and tapas bars set in plazas and narrow alleys. Though small, it's easy to get lost in Tarifa's narrow labyrinth of streets. Out towards the seafront, venture onto the long jetty of Punta del Santo, or over to a second lighthouse on Palomas Isle-the official tip of Europe. Round the point and you're on the long stretch of beach at Playa de Los Lances. High winds make it the most popular windsurfing and kitesurfing spot on the continent. Enjoy the beach breezes, relax among the sand dunes, or stop at a bar or restaurant - which can turn quite happening nightspots once the sun sets.
