The reason why CrossCountry trains are popular is because passengers can travel long distances across the UK, without making too many stops. That means you can travel throughout the England, Wales and Scotland, stopping only at major train stations along the route to transfer to reach your destination. CrossCountry offers two main classes for passengers: Standard Class and First Class. Those traveling in First Class can expect larger seats, tables, power outlets, WiFi and an in-seat complimentary food and drink on most of CrossCountry services. Standard Class has the option to pre-book seats at tables as well as purchase food and drinks the catering on-board.
WiFi is available on all high-speed and Voyager trains for an additional fee. Promotions and discounts are available for purchasing advanced tickets for specific train times and Off-Peak tickets. Anytime, single and Peak tickets are all also available.
CrossCountry Trains are usually quite narrow due to their high-speed capacity, therefore it is important to ensure the aisles are kept clear. You can bring up to 1 item of baggage measuring 90cm x 70cm x 30cm. You can store suitcases safely in the baggage compartment as you enter the carriage. For smaller items, you can use the baggage racks overhead to place soft items, small shopping bags and laptops; alternatively place them under the seat in front of you. Make sure your baggage does not block the aisles or exits.
CrossCountry Trains offer free Wifi to First Class ticket holders. Standard Class passengers can buy Elapsed Time WiFi. If you buy online you can save 10%. This allows you to connect to read and send messages, send emails and browse the web. If you want to open large files, watch videos or films, try to download them beforehand as the data available will not cover this.
Passengers are normally allowed to take pets with them on journeys, provided they are kept on a lead or in a cage. Small animals which are permitted on the train include cats, dogs, and other small animals (maximum 2 per person). They must not cause inconvenience or stress to other passengers, nor occupy any seats. Always check with CrossCountry should you have any concerns before traveling.
Should you lose any baggage or items of clothing or coats, report where and when you think you lost the item on the CrossCountry website. Their customer service will contact you if they retrieve it, or if it in handed in. Similarly, if you find anything on a train or at the station then hand it in to train station staff. Remember to keep clear of unattended baggage and inform a member of staff right away.
Great news - bikes are allowed on CrossCountry trains. Folding bikes can be stored in the baggage racks to save space. Ensure to reserve a space online (free of charge) to make sure that there is a space for your bicycle. You can even use social media to inform CrossCountry of your reservation. Make sure you know where to store your it by asking a Train Manager.
CrossCountry is the first UK train provider to remove the fee for amending or refunding Advance tickets. This is great news, as you can amend your ticket up to 24 hours before you travel without spending extra money on the fee. Plans can always change, so this advantage gives you much more flexibility.
Although there is no minimum age a minor can travel, it's essential that children are aware of the risks of train travel. It is up to the parents to decide if the child is fit to travel. If a member of staff is worried about a child traveling on their own, they may inform the British Transport Police to ensure their safety.
Some tickets may allow you to apply for a refund, if you haven't used them yet, if the train is heavily delayed and canceled. Under certain circumstances, some cheaper tickets may be non-refundable - such as if it is an Advanced ticket. For your claim to be considered, be sure to apply for a refund within 28 days of the ticket's expiry date. Make sure you check the terms and conditions of the ticket before you buy.
