Trains from Salzburg to Vienna

A train leaves Salzburg for Vienna approximately every 10  minutes. The route mostly takes less than three hours to cover, and is serviced by three rail operators.

There are 87 departures from Salzburg headed for Vienna each day. Departures commence at about 03:15 each day. The last departure is shortly after 10:00 pm each day. There are about five departures per hour throughout the day.

 How long is the journey by train from Salzburg to Vienna?

By far the majority of the trips are direct and take about two hours and 20 minutes to complete. 10 trips each day (spread throughout the day) require one transfer, but are still completed, mostly, within three hours. (The exception here is the late-night departure by OBB Railjet, which has a long layover at the transfer point.) 

 What are the departure and arrival stations for trains from Salzburg to Vienna?

 Departure train station:  OBB trains and those operated by Westbahn leave from the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, Salzburg's main station. (This accounts for 64 of the 87 daily departures.)

Flixtrain operates its route from the Lastenstrasse bus and train station. The two stations are a 10 minute drive apart. Both stations are about 20 minutes drive from the city centre, but are well-serviced by public transport.

 Arrival train station: OBB trains arrive at the well-appointed Vienna Central station, located very close to the city centre - about 5 minutes drive away.  Westbahn trains make use of the Westbahnhof station. Both of these stations are very well serviced by public transport.

Flixtrain routes include a stop at the smaller Hutteldorff station, and then continue to the Westbahnhof station. Hutteldorff offers easy access to Salzburg's  stadium (Rapid Vienna's home ground), as well as to the local subway system.

 Which train companies travel from Salzburg to Vienna?

OBB operates this route using its traditional passenger trains, its Nightjet service - the overnight passenger rail trains, as well as its Fastjet high-speed service.  Flixtrain and Westbahn are also active on the route.

OBB's passenger trains travel 26 times a day, its Nightjet service 3 times, and its Railjet service 17 times. Westbahn offers 18 trips each weekday. Flixtrain operates 23 journeys a day.

 Trains Salzburg Vienna: Services on Board

All OBB trains offer first and second class services.  Westbahn and Flixtrain offer only standard tickets on this route.

OBB restricts passengers to two suitcases and one piece of hand luggage. The operator allows bicycles, folded in a protective cover, but requires a bicycle ticket to be bought at 10% of the cost of the passenger ticket. Small pets can be carried for free as long as they are transported in a container. Larger animals can be taken on board on a leash, and at a fee.

Westbahn has similar policies for luggage, but requires a bike spot to be booked in advance.

Flixtrain allows only one large piece of luggage per person, and requires the booking of space for bicycles. The policy pertaining to pets is the same as for the other operators.

All operators and stations provide assistance for the disabled. This should be arranged in advance of the departure date.
