Milan

Milan is an energetic city and one of the most populated metropolitan places in Europe. It is the home of Italy's stock exchange, Borsa Italiana, and high-end fashion houses, like Versace, Missoni and Prada. Milan has a turbulent history, over the centuries it has played home to many occupying forces and therefore its architecture is different to the medieval marvels in other Italian cities. Amongst the antiquities are numerous contemporary buildings, like the Pirelli Skyscraper and Cà Brutta, once known as the 'ugly house'. For visitors who enjoy history, the Milan Cathedral is a gothic treasure, filled with elaborate works of art and unusual religious relics. After spending a few quite hours there, take a walk over to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a crucifix shaped shopping centre - the oldest in Europe. There are many bargains to be found within its arching glass arcades, plus it provides the ideal route for an evening's trip to the opera at La Scala. Leonardo da Vinci's iconic masterpiece, The Last Supper, is forever associated with Milan. To see it be sure to book in advance with the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie where it is kept.
